When I am by the sea, I often reflect on what it must have been like for my grandmother back in her day. I hear many of my First Nations relatives talk about her, how kind she was, how gentle, how soft spoken.
Since I am unable to understand the difficulties she would have endured in her time before me, I am honoring her by creating this image with her in my heart. My grandmother died of neglect after contracting Pneumonia.
The indignity and ignorance that surrounds our people, prevents the healing needed to build bridges between cultures. My grandmother was a beautiful woman with a generous heart and loving touch. Even though I never met her, I can feel her presence with me sometimes. A powerful reminder of the truth about who we are as a Nation.
