As my husband and I walked along a quiet road on Salt Spring Island, we met a man, an elder from the community. He looked at us with so much compassion and warmth in his eyes. Without saying much, he picked up an old tin cup and filled it with oats, and began honking the horn of his truck. Dozens of deer came sprinting out of nowhere towards him. As they all fought to eat from the tin cup, he smiled and handed it to me. When it emptied, he refilled it several times, as I gave each deer a chance to eat from it. I had never fed a wild deer before, so this was quite an experience for me. I reached out and touched their soft summer antlers and coat. An hour passed by so quickly and then we had to go catch the ferry home. I will never forget this experience given to me by a kind stranger. About
