The Winnower
Purchase a Limited Edition Giclée of this painting

The Winnower is a person who separates the grain of rice from it's shell. It's a process practiced for many
generations by the Algonquin people. The huts surrounding her, are called wigwams, and are easy
to build and transport. I liked the simplicity of the lives of these nomadic people. I also always wondered where
wild rice came from, which lead me to create this painting. The actual homes are much larger, but for this painting
I made them smaller, for just 1 or 2 people. The people in the distance, are gathering rice near the lake shores. When
they return, they will empty the canoe onto a mat where the winnower will then proceed to prepare the rice for
consumption.
