There is something so mysterious about the desert. Miles and miles of sand with ancient civilizations and skeletons from the past buried beneath it. Occasionally, it reveals a piece of truth, allowing us to learn more about our past. When I painted this image, I had not had the opportunity to actually go to the desert in Arizona and explore. When I finally went in the winter of 2006, it was very hot. My husband and I went to some of the ancient villages, abandoned thousands of years ago due to the river rising. There was ancient pottery scattered throughout the deserted villages, and posts where the homes once stood. There were also signs everywhere saying not to take anything on the ground you may find. Nobody was around for miles, and we were alone to explore for as long as we wanted. The patterns on the pots I painted several years ago, matched the pieces we saw on the ground.
