Spirit of the West Coast
Black-capped chickadees make their homes in many different climates in Canada,
and I often see them on my many hikes throughout Vancouver Island. They are
friendly birds that do not migrate during winter months, giving me the opportunity
to feed and study them throughout the year.
I painted this piece from my imagination as a place on Vancouver Island, but I have probably seen it and don’t remember where. |

I was thinking of how, after the sun goes down, everything changes color and becomes a couple of shades darker just before it gets really dark. You notice all the little birds settling in and these particular birds were chickadees. This was during the springtime, in April or early May, so the trilliums were out. These little birds are everywhere, from one side of the island to the other, so when I see them, they remind me of home, a symbol of the “Spirit of the West Coast”.
