Grandmother's Journey

(Dedicated to my Grandmother Carvanen)

When I am by the sea, I often reflect on what it must have been like for my grandmother back in her day. I hear many of my First Nations relatives talk about her, how kind she was, how gentle, how soft spoken.

Grandmother's Journey

I wish I had known my grandmother for a few years before she passed, but she died at the age of 41 of pleurisy/pneumonia, when my mother was only 4 years of age. I often hear people say how much I resemble her in the shape of my face. Many smile when they look at me, which makes me realize that she was loved.

I constantly look ahead and think about our Native Canadian peoples, how important it is to understand the culture, the ways. Many people don’t realize that Native Canadian culture is so pure, so untainted by corruption and greed. The faith of the Native peoples was misunderstood by early settlers, and was said to be devil worshipping and voodoo. How wrong they were! If they only knew what gifts lie behind the ceremonies and the teachings and the Elders. I can understand that it would be difficult for many non-native people to participate unless they are invited. It’s not that difficult to ask though, and that would be the beginning of bridge building and the elimination of cultural barriers.
